Gestions Hospitalières - The architecture of today's hospital, the question of galleries
The architectural composition of a hospital layout has changed radically since the 19th century. So much so that the very notion of architecture seems to have deserted "hospital architecture". The logic of flows has extended its hold over the composition of our hospital plans, and the ratio of floor space to floor area has become the main qualitative criterion: no more "galleries" but "corridors" that thread their way with difficulty between rooms and are called "useful surface areas". Coline Periano, a doctoral student in the philosophy of medicine at ENS Paris and a research fellow at the Michel Rémon & Associés architecture studio, takes a closer look at the absence of galleries in hospitals.
